Beagle photo update and Tanaka Farms CSA!

May 5, 2010 by

The 9-year-old has requested more canine photography, so here is the latest followed by a farm that will surprise you. Let’s talk about a local Orange County Community Supported Agriculture – CSA.

Now, onto the information side of the post today. TANAKA FARMS CSA

The Box upon arrival

These are what we have been waiting for! Our sweet, organically grown strawberries. It is very early in the season.

Peas Shelling These peas need to be removed from their shells. Add them to a salad raw or steam, boil or saute them by themselves or with other vegetables.

Navel Oranges

A virtual cornacopia of goodness

Over the weekend, Ms Jenna shared with me a great delightful find. Did you know you could get a box of fresh vegetable/fruits from a local farm here in Orange County, California?

Jenna was inspiring which made me run to a computer to find my closest CSA group.  CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a partnership between a farm and a community.  CSA provides a direct link between the growing of fruits/vegetable and my family devouring them. Our family now covers Tanaka farm’s operating budget by purchasing a share of the season’s harvest. We commit to support the farm throughout the season, assume the costs, risks and bounty of growing food along with the farmer.  I now help pay for seeds, fertilizer, water, equipment maintenance, and labor.  In return, Tanaka farm provides, to the best of its ability, barring the ever elusive El Nino, a healthy supply of seasonal fresh produce throughout the growing season.

I love a win-win.

I called Eileen Kato at Tanaka Farms (the nicest woman EVER) and she helped me find a local school to piggy back off their CSA program. (They were happy to include others interested in the program) Call her, mention Kathleen’s Sugar and Spice Blog, and she will do her very best to help you!
