I care about… Someone Cares Soup Kitchen

December 15, 2010 by Kathleen

This video inspired me last week.

Go ahead and watch, I’ll wait.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_3BEwpv0dM]

Wow, a gourmet chef in India watches an elderly man suffer and it changes his life. His  purpose becomes helping the down trodden in India leading him to be recognized by CNN as a 2010 hero.

Long exhale. What an amazing man.

I was inspired. And I began to think what can I do for my community?

IMG_6999 - CopySo when I was asked to help out by Marcy Massura, co-founder of BlogCrush, at Someone Cares Soup Kitchen in Costa Mesa California, it was Kismet. How did she know this video pounded my heart? The universe was coming together and pointing me in the direction of the soup kitchen. I feel deeply that there is a secret ingredient you can put into your IMG_3381 - Copyfood everyday, it is love. The taste lingers long after eating. And I now know if a friend asks me to help out in a soup kitchen where I can add some of my own love, the answer will always be “yes please”.

To understand this organization,  the mission of Someone Cares Soup Kitchen is simple: to feed a daily nutritional meal to the homeless, the unemployed, the working poor, the mentally challenged, the physically challenged, the senior citizens and most important of all — the children. They feeds more than 450 guests 7 days a week a hot meal. Monday thru Friday from 1-4pm and then pancakes with syrup for breakfast on the weekends. Of those served;

  • IMG_7006 - Copy25 percent are families with school-aged children,
  • 30 percent are homeless,
  • 20 percent are working poor or unemployed,
  • 15 percent are senior citizens and
  • 10 percent are mentally or physically disabled.

See this young Momma to the right with her 5 week old newborn? She rides the bus across town to visit the soup kitchen daily for her only meal. The staff welcomes her and evenIMG_3336-1 - Copy holds her baby for a few brief minute while she eats. AND if her baby gets fussy she can ask for hospital quality formula to fill his belly too.

And now I am going to call you to task my friends.

The Soup Kitchen needs our help more than ever.  They have launched a campaign $50,000 in 50 days. To provide toys, basic essentials and a holiday meal to thousands here in Orange County. Not to mention supporting its ongoing tutoring program for local at-risk Orange County children. Please join me in reaching the $50,000 in 50 days!IMG_7013 - Copy

    Priscilla, I thoroughly enjoyed meeting your daughter – she is so beautiful. A chip off the momma block. I also loved how she served those bacon wrapped hot dogs. I wish I could have joined you tonight.
