Where in the world is the Outer Banks?

for sale arial, generic helvetica, sick sans-serif; color: #000000; font-size: 14px;”>Being from the West Coast (Southern California), the East Coast destination of the Outer Banks leaves many Californian’s with blank looks in their eyes or a non-understanding nod. “Where did you say?”. I explain about a delightful find off the shores of North Carolina, the Outer Banks. The typical response is “never knew the place existed”. But when you do find a friend who is in-the-know, you will see jumpy claps of excitement wanting to hear  stories and view your photo albums with nostalgia in their eyes.

 Out Banks Map

The Outer Banks consists of 130 miles of powdery sand and sea shell treasures, accompanied by a beautifully warm water coastline. Warmer water than the Pacific here in So Cal by far. It has six distinct areas to settle down in, each unique. To the North; Corolla, Duck, Nags Head (Including Kill Devil Kills and Kitty Hawk) Roanoke Island, and Hatteras Island to the south. We chose Kill Devil Hills in the heart of the Outer Banks narrow peninsula, it has a little bit of everything. Plus our dear friends were getting married and we wanted to share the week prior to their big day with an adjacent beach house. Best decision EVER.

From Orange County we flew into Norfolk, Virginia.

Then drove to the Outer Banks about an hour and half to the south.

The drive from Virginia is a straight shot from the Airport.

I still get all excited when crossing state lines.

Lots of green grass, forests, and farmers markets.

There is only one toll road/booth stop along the way. DH laughed at the toll sign, ‘Turn Off Your Windshield Wipers’. Imagine the worker complaints to management back in the day before the sign was posted. In Cali we don’t get really heavy rain that could pummel a toll booth worker multiple times before paying your toll.

The Avalon Pier is an old but reliable Kill Devil Hills friend.

(click the link above for a live piercam) I only do this 9-10 times a day)

Turn up your computers volume to hear the waves landing on the shore.

Can’t wait to hear someone mention their trip to the Outer Banks in the future.

I will greet the mention with Jumpy Claps.
